If you are looking for a puppy, we can offer the following observation.  The internet has spawned a new generation of "puppy-millers" who have created a "cottage" business using computers and marketing skills, their love of dogs (?), their love of money and sometimes their "love of God" to provide themselves with a very comfortable way of life.  These "puppy-millers" breed many litters of puppies every year, not just the 1-3 litters they state on their websites.  They don't offer meaningful health and temperament guarantees and they boast about "champion pedigrees" but don't display any on their website.  This is usually because the one champion mentioned is four or more generations back.  These breeders do not show their dogs (that would cost money!) and they do not provide clearances for the major hereditary defects plaguing retrievers; hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and eye defects.  They often follow poor breeding practices and produce dogs of sub-standard temperaments and poor health.

Following are some of the "warning signs" for helping to identify these puppy-millers:

1. they take credit cards at the time of internet ordering

2. you fill out a form on-line and submit your deposit

3. if there is a health guarantee it is minimal and does not cover major health issues

4. the puppies are not Canadian Kennel Club registered ( or the registration costs extra)

5. there is no pre-screening of buyers or their homes and often no Sunday visitation or sales

6. The websites have gospel music playing in the background, scriptures or other quotations throughout and pictures of  their "angelic children" crying as the puppies leave

7. there is little evidence of the breeders knowledge and experience with the breed

8. the breeders don't have any breed club or kennel club affiliation

9. the dogs don't have any titles to indicate that the breeder uses their dogs for anything except producing puppies

10. there is evidence of other farm animals such as cows, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks also being raised for profit

11. there are several breeds of dogs and there are always puppies "in stock"

12. there are buildings or barns near their homes which could house dozens (or hundreds) of dogs

13. the puppies do not look (or smell) reasonably clean

14. there is no evidence that the breeding stock is screened for hip dysplasia, elbow  dysplasia or eye abnormalities
